in terms of weight, patterns and finish? For instance, I feel that larger scale herringbones are nice for an overcoating but too much for a jacket.

Gruto Good morning /Evening depending on where you are ...Overcoats are heavier weight than jacketing..from 400gms upto 700 gms . The yarn used is much thicker so when you say larger herringbones are nice...because of the thickness of yarn you get a much thicker bigger design ..Usually the finer the yarn the cleaner and clearer the design..Look at herringbones in fine classics compared with premier cru.So its impossible to get neat jacketing patterns in overcoat designs.Finish wise we use several we find a ripple finish works well with Cashmere.
